North Korea Test Launches Another Missile. Trump Responds By Mocking Kim Jong Un.
On Tuesday morning, North Korea conducted another missile test, launching a projectile that government propagandists claim can “reach anywhere in the world.”
According to state media, the missile reached a height of about 1,741 miles, the highest altitude ever achieved by the North Korean military.
It’s important to take the hermit kingdom’s claims with a grain of salt, as regime broadcasters routinely exaggerate the military’s ability to strike distant targets, including the mainland United States.
Nonetheless, the test-launch, deliberately scheduled on the 4th of July, is designed to send a signal of defiance to America following the Trump administration’s increasingly adamant efforts to control and contain Kim Jong Un’s nuclear program. The fact that the launch was personally ordered by the Supreme Leader himself was not lost on President Trump.
Responding to the hermit kingdom’s latest act of provocation, Trump used his unique ability to ridicule self-important figureheads, like Kim, to his advantage.
“Does this guy have anything better to do with his life?” Trump tweeted Tuesday in a reference to the launch. The president went on to indirectly threaten the regime by invoking his administration’s recent diplomatic talks with China over North Korea’s erratic behavior.
“North Korea has just launched another missile,” he wrote in a series of tweets. “Does this guy have anything better to do with his life? Hard to believe that South Korea and Japan will put up with this much longer. Perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all!”
Trump has been speaking with leaders from both China and Japan ahead of the G20 summit in Germany.
After eight years of the Obama administration’s appeasement policies, many, including American allies in the Middle East and South Asia, are looking for stronger leadership from the United States. With more aggressive posturing toward North Korea and Iran, Trump may be on his way to fulfilling that desire.
